Low stamina in bed is common. Here is what works for Indian men, how long it takes, and which quick fixes to avoid.

Fully charged battery at 100 percent, a visual metaphor for high energy and sex stamina in men

If you have typed "how to increase sex stamina for male" into your phone, here is the honest answer: there is no overnight fix, but a few habits have real evidence behind them. Daily Kegel exercises, regular cardio, the stop-start technique, better sleep and cutting alcohol and tobacco all help, and treating the underlying cause matters most.

If you feel you finish too soon, lose your erection halfway, or simply run out of energy in bed, you are not alone. "1 in 4 men struggle with ED and PE", and low stamina is one of the most common reasons men quietly search for help late at night. The good news: in many men it has a cause that can be found and worked on. In one 2014 study, 12 weeks of pelvic floor training helped 33 of 40 men with lifelong premature ejaculation gain control.

Below you will find what actually causes low stamina, the 10 ways that help (numbered in bold), which desi remedies and "stamina tablets" to skip, and when it is time to see a doctor.

What causes low sex stamina in men?

Low sex stamina usually has a specific cause: premature ejaculation, an erection that fades, low fitness, low testosterone or desire, stress and poor sleep, or habits and health conditions. The fix depends on which one applies to you, so start here.

"Stamina" means different things to different men. For some it means lasting longer before climax. For others it means keeping an erection firm until the end, or simply having the energy and desire for sex. Each of these has different causes, which is why the same tip or tablet does not work for everyone.

Premature ejaculation: climaxing too soon

If your main worry is finishing very quickly after penetration, with little control over it and distress about it, the issue may be premature ejaculation (PE), sometimes searched as shighrapatan. Doctors use the ISSM definition: in lifelong PE, climax usually comes within about 1 minute of penetration from the first sexual experiences; in acquired PE, there is a clear drop from your usual time, often to about 3 minutes or less. It is one of the most common sexual problems in men, and it is treatable. Many men who say they have "low stamina" actually have PE, and they do best when it is treated as PE. Our guide to premature ejaculation treatment options explains the full medical and home route.

Erection that fades midway (ED)

Some men last long enough but lose their erection before they finish, or cannot get fully hard. This is erectile dysfunction (ED), sometimes called impotence. It is common, especially after 40, and very often linked to blood flow, diabetes, blood pressure or stress. It can be treated once the cause is clear; read more in our guide to erectile dysfunction causes and treatment.

Low fitness and tiredness

Sex is physical activity. If you get breathless climbing two flights of stairs, you may also tire quickly in bed. Long working hours, a desk job, little movement and extra weight around the belly all lower your energy. This is the easiest cause to fix on your own.

Low desire or low testosterone

If you rarely feel like having sex, feel tired all the time, or have lost muscle and gained belly fat, low testosterone may be part of the picture. A simple blood test can check it. Sleep, exercise and weight loss help, and our guide to natural ways to raise testosterone covers what works. For the warning signs, see low testosterone symptoms in men.

Stress, performance anxiety and poor sleep

Work pressure, money worries, fights at home and too little sleep all affect sex. Worry about performing is especially common in younger men: one rushed night leads to more worry next time, which makes it happen again. In these men the body is usually fine; the mind is running the show.

Habits and health conditions: alcohol, smoking, gutkha, diabetes, BP, thyroid

Smoking, chewing tobacco (gutkha, khaini, pan masala) and heavy drinking damage the blood vessels that an erection depends on. Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and thyroid problems can cause ED, PE or low desire. Sometimes low stamina is the first sign of one of these conditions, which is a good reason to take it seriously rather than just buying a booster.

This is the idea behind how we work at Raaz. Two men can describe the same problem and need completely different help: one needs his sugar controlled, another needs his sleep and stress sorted, a third needs PE treated directly. Finding your root cause first, instead of handing everyone the same pills, is what makes the rest of this guide work.

How do Kegel exercises help you last longer?

Kegels strengthen the pelvic floor muscles that control ejaculation and help keep an erection firm. In a 2014 study, 33 of 40 men with lifelong premature ejaculation gained control after 12 weeks of pelvic floor training.

Way 1: Kegel exercises. Your pelvic floor is a sling of muscles between your scrotum and back passage. The same muscles squeeze during ejaculation and help keep blood trapped in the penis during an erection. When they are stronger and you can control them, you can hold back the urge to climax more easily.

The evidence is encouraging. In the 2014 study, the 40 men started with an average time to ejaculation of under one minute. After 12 weeks of pelvic floor training, 33 of them had gained control, with an average time of about two and a half minutes. It was a small study without a comparison group, so treat it as promising rather than proof, but Kegels are free, safe and easy to do anywhere.

How to find the right muscles

  • The next time you pass urine, try to slow or stop the flow for a second. The muscles you use are your pelvic floor. Do this only once or twice to learn the feeling; do not make it a habit, as it can stop your bladder emptying fully.
  • Another way: tighten the muscles you would use to stop yourself passing gas. You should feel a lift at the base of the penis.
  • Your stomach, thighs and buttocks should stay relaxed.

A simple daily Kegel routine (5 steps)

  1. Empty your bladder and lie on your back with your knees bent, as in the picture above.
  2. Squeeze the pelvic floor muscles and hold for 3 to 5 seconds, breathing normally. Do not hold your breath.
  3. Relax fully for the same amount of time. Relaxing is as important as squeezing.
  4. Repeat 10 to 15 times. That is one set. Do 3 sets a day.
  5. Progress slowly: as it gets easy, hold for up to 10 seconds, and practise sitting and standing too, so you can use the muscles during sex.

Give it at least 8 to 12 weeks of daily practice before you judge the results. For a detailed plan, including quick "flicks" and how to use the muscles in the moment, read our guide to Kegel exercises that help you last longer.

Which exercises build sex stamina at home?

Regular cardio such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming or skipping improves blood flow and energy, and simple strength moves like squats and glute bridges build endurance. Aim for about 30 to 40 minutes on most days.

Cardio for blood flow and endurance

Way 2: Cardio. An erection is a blood-flow event, and a healthy heart and blood vessels make it easier to get and keep one. Cardio also means you are less breathless and tired in bed.

A 2018 review in the journal Sexual Medicine found that about 160 minutes a week of moderate aerobic exercise (for example, 40 minutes four times a week) for six months reduced erection problems in men who were inactive, overweight or had high blood pressure. Good options you can start this week:

  • Brisk walking: fast enough that talking takes effort. The easiest start for most men, and an early-morning walk in the park beats the afternoon heat.
  • Cycling: outdoors or on a stationary bike. Use a well-padded seat and stand up on the pedals now and then to take pressure off the groin.
  • Swimming: easy on the knees and good for the whole body.
  • Skipping or stair climbing: ideal if you cannot get out of the house. Start with short rounds.
  • Sports: badminton, football or cricket nets all count if you move continuously.

Bodyweight strength moves you can do at home

Way 3: Strength training. Stronger legs, hips and core make you less tired during sex and support a healthy weight and testosterone. You need no gym. Two or three sessions a week of these is a good start:

  • Squats: 3 sets of 10 to 15. Work the thighs and buttocks.
  • Glute bridges: lie on your back, knees bent, and lift your hips. 3 sets of 12. These also engage the pelvic floor.
  • Planks: hold 20 to 40 seconds, 3 times. Build the core.
  • Push-ups: on the knees if needed, 3 sets of as many as you can do with good form.
  • Lunges: 3 sets of 10 per leg for balance and leg strength.

If you have heart disease, very high blood pressure or joint problems, check with a doctor before starting. For a deeper routine, see our guide to exercises that improve erections and stamina.

What should you eat for better sex stamina?

No single food works like a medicine, but a diet rich in zinc, magnesium, flavonoids and healthy fats supports blood flow, hormones and energy. Everyday Indian foods like pumpkin seeds, almonds, eggs, chana and seasonal fruit do the job.

Foods to add

Way 4: A stamina-friendly Indian diet. You do not need expensive imported "superfoods". A regular Indian thali with enough protein, vegetables and fruit covers most of what matters.

NutrientWhy it helpsEveryday Indian foods
ZincNeeded to make testosterone and healthy spermPumpkin seeds, eggs, chana, rajma, curd, cashews
MagnesiumSupports muscle and nerve function and energyAlmonds, palak (spinach), bananas, whole grains like bajra and ragi
Flavonoids and antioxidantsProtect blood vessels and support blood flowSeasonal fruit (guava, amla, oranges, pomegranate), onions, green or black tea
ProteinBuilds muscle and keeps energy steadyDal, rajma, chana, paneer, curd, eggs, fish, chicken
Healthy fatsNeeded for hormone productionPeanuts, almonds, walnuts, avocado, a little ghee or mustard oil

Keep portions sensible: a heavy, oily meal just before sex makes most men sluggish. For a full Indian diet chart and what to eat before bed, read our guide to foods that help you last longer in bed.

What to cut: alcohol, smoking, gutkha and junk food

Way 5: Cutting alcohol, smoking and gutkha. This is often the single biggest change a man can make.

  • Cigarettes and bidis narrow and stiffen blood vessels and reduce nitric oxide, the natural chemical that relaxes the penis so blood can flow in. Read more on how smoking affects erections.
  • Gutkha, khaini and pan masala carry the same nicotine harm to blood vessels, often at high doses, plus other toxins. See chewing tobacco and erection problems.
  • Alcohol: a drink may relax you, but heavy drinking dulls sensation, makes erections softer and, over time, lowers testosterone. Our guide on alcohol and erectile dysfunction explains how much is too much.
  • Junk food and sugary drinks: fried snacks, sweets and colas add belly fat and raise the risk of diabetes, which harms erections over time.

How do sleep, stress and yoga affect sex stamina?

Poor sleep lowers testosterone and energy, and stress or performance anxiety makes you climax sooner or lose your erection. Seven to nine hours of sleep, slow belly breathing and yoga or meditation help, alongside exercise rather than instead of it.

Way 6: Seven to nine hours of sleep. Much of the day's testosterone is released during sleep, and studies link short sleep with lower testosterone and lower desire. Late nights on the phone, shift work and untreated snoring (which can be sleep apnoea) all eat into this. Try to sleep and wake at the same time daily, keep the phone out of bed, and avoid tea or coffee after the early evening.

Way 7: Stress control. Stress hormones pull blood away from the penis and put your nervous system on alert, which is exactly the state that speeds up ejaculation. This creates a loop many young Indian men know well: one rushed night, then worry about the next time, then more pressure, then it happens again. Breaking the loop matters as much as any exercise. Our article on how stress causes premature ejaculation explains it in detail.

Simple habits that help:

  • Belly breathing: breathe in through the nose for 4 seconds so your stomach (not your chest) rises, then breathe out slowly for 6 seconds. Five minutes a day, and a few breaths during sex when you feel close.
  • Yoga: poses that relax the hips and strengthen the core and pelvic floor, practised regularly. See yoga for premature ejaculation for poses and what the research shows.
  • Mindfulness: 10 minutes a day of sitting quietly and noticing your breath trains you to stay in the present moment instead of worrying during sex.
  • Talk about it: if anxiety or low mood is affecting daily life, a counsellor or doctor can help. There is no shame in that.

Be realistic: sleep, breathing and yoga support stamina, but on their own they rarely fix PE or ED. They work best alongside the other steps here.

What can you do during sex to last longer?

Slow down: longer foreplay, slow breathing, and the stop-start or squeeze techniques help you notice and control the point of no return. Talking openly with your partner also lowers the pressure that makes many men finish early.

Way 8: The stop-start and squeeze techniques. Both are described by the NHS and both need practice. Try them alone during masturbation first, then with your partner once you feel more confident.

The stop-start technique

  1. Start stimulation until you feel you are getting close to climax.
  2. Stop all stimulation completely and breathe slowly.
  3. Wait about 30 seconds, or until the urge fades.
  4. Start again. Repeat three or four times before you allow yourself to finish.

The squeeze technique

  1. When you feel close, stop.
  2. Squeeze the head of the penis firmly for 10 to 20 seconds, then let go.
  3. Wait about 30 seconds, then carry on.

With practice, most men learn to recognise the moment before the "point of no return" much earlier. The NHS also mentions a few simple tricks: masturbating an hour or two before sex, using a thick condom to reduce sensation, and having sex with your partner on top so your partner can pull away when you are close. For the full step-by-step guide, read home remedies for premature ejaculation, and for positions, see positions that help you last longer.

Foreplay and talking to your partner

Way 9: Slower foreplay and honest conversation. Sex is not a race, and it is not only penetration. Longer foreplay, kissing and touching make sex more satisfying for your partner and take the spotlight off how long intercourse lasts. Many couples find this change alone takes away most of the pressure.

Talking helps too. In India, many men face this in the first months of an arranged marriage, with little privacy in a joint family and quiet pressure to "perform". Telling your partner that you are working on it, and asking what your partner enjoys, builds trust and usually lowers anxiety for both of you. If you are not sure how to start, our guide on how to talk to your partner about premature ejaculation has practical words to use.

Do ayurvedic remedies and stamina tablets sold in India work?

A few herbs such as ashwagandha show small benefits in early studies, but no ayurvedic remedy or over-the-counter "stamina booster" is proven to fix PE or ED. Prescription medicines can help when a doctor finds the cause, and should never be taken without one.

Most Indian men try something from the chemist, a roadside clinic, a neem-hakeem or an online ad before they see a doctor. It is understandable: sexual health problems (the old term is "gupt rog") are rarely talked about openly, and a bottle of "power capsules" feels easier than a conversation. Here is an honest read of the most common options.

Ashwagandha, shilajit and other herbs: what the evidence says

  • Ashwagandha: a handful of small trials, several of them from India and mostly in men with low desire or stress, report modest improvements in sexual well-being and testosterone compared with a dummy capsule. That is encouraging, but it is early evidence, and none of these trials shows that ashwagandha treats PE or ED.
  • Shilajit: widely sold for "power" and stamina, but good-quality human studies on sexual stamina are lacking. Raw or poorly purified shilajit can contain heavy metals.
  • Safed musli, gokshura, kaunch beej and similar herbs: traditional use is long, but reliable trials showing they improve stamina in men are few and small.

Onion, honey and "stamina oils": popular but unproven

Searches like "how to last longer using onion" are very common. Onion, garlic, honey, dates and milk with dry fruits are healthy foods, but there is no good evidence that any of them increases sex stamina on its own. "Stamina oils" and sprays massaged onto the penis are unregulated; some contain numbing agents that can irritate the skin or reduce sensation for your partner too. Treat them with caution, and never apply anything that burns or causes a rash.

The real risks: heavy metals and hidden drugs

"Herbal" does not always mean safe. A 2008 study in JAMA tested ayurvedic medicines bought online and found that about one in five contained detectable lead, mercury or arsenic, whether they were made in India or the US. These metals can harm the kidneys, liver and nerves over time.

The second risk is hidden drugs. The US FDA warns that many male enhancement, energy and stamina pills are likely to contain dangerous hidden ingredients, and its public list of flagged products runs into the hundreds. When the hidden ingredient is an erection medicine, it can be dangerous for men who take nitrate medicines for heart disease, because the combination can drop blood pressure sharply. The same caution applies to the "100% herbal, instant result" medicines sold by roadside clinics.

Prescription options a doctor may consider

When low stamina comes from a medical cause, proper medicine can help a great deal. What a doctor chooses depends on the cause:

  • For premature ejaculation: dapoxetine, or certain SSRI medicines that delay ejaculation, and sometimes numbing creams or sprays.
  • For erection problems: sildenafil or tadalafil, after checking your heart health and the other medicines you take. These must never be combined with nitrate medicines (such as chest-pain sprays or tablets) or poppers, and men with heart disease or low blood pressure need a doctor's clearance first.
  • For low testosterone, thyroid, diabetes or BP: treating that condition often improves stamina on its own.

All of these should be taken only on a doctor's prescription. In many Indian towns they are easy to buy across the counter, but that does not make them right for you: they have side effects and interactions, and the right choice depends on your cause, age and health.

Stamina myths many Indian men grow up with

  • "Losing semen drains your strength." Many men believe that losing semen, through masturbation or nightfall, drains strength and stamina (sometimes called dhat). This is a myth. The body makes semen continuously, and releasing it does not weaken you. Worrying about it, though, can cause real anxiety, which does affect sex.
  • "A real man lasts for 30 minutes." Films and porn set false expectations. Most couples are happy with far less, and foreplay matters more to many partners than the minutes of intercourse.
  • "One strong capsule will fix it for good." No pill, herbal or otherwise, permanently fixes a problem whose cause has not been found.
  • "Only older men have this problem." PE and performance anxiety are very common in men in their twenties, and ED can start early in men with diabetes, obesity or heavy smoking.

For a wider view of these problems and their causes, see our guide to sexual problems in men.

When should you see a doctor about low sex stamina?

See a doctor if the problem started suddenly, happens most times you have sex, has not improved after one to two months of lifestyle changes, or comes with erection trouble, low desire or constant tiredness. These often point to a treatable cause.

Way 10: Treat the root cause with a doctor. Book a consultation if:

  • You climax within about a minute most times, or have done so since you first had sex.
  • You often lose your erection or cannot get fully hard.
  • The change came on suddenly, without an obvious reason.
  • You have tried the steps above for one to two months with little change.
  • You feel tired all the time, have low desire or have lost muscle.
  • You have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or a thyroid problem.
  • You are thinking of taking any tablet, including "herbal" ones.
  • It is affecting your mood, confidence or relationship.

A doctor will ask about your symptoms, habits and health, and may suggest blood tests for sugar, testosterone or thyroid. If you are unsure whom to see, read which doctor to consult for premature ejaculation. Results depend on the cause and the person, but working on the actual cause gives you the best chance of real improvement, so there is every reason to ask.

At Raaz, doctors have already held 50,000+ consultations with men facing exactly this, and every plan is built around your root cause rather than the same pills for everyone. You can see what a consultation and plan cost on the Raaz plans page.

The bottom line: real sex stamina is built, not bought. Start with the habits that have evidence: daily Kegels, cardio and simple strength work, a balanced Indian diet, less alcohol and no tobacco, proper sleep and calmer breathing, and the stop-start technique. Give them a few weeks. If you are still finishing too soon, losing your erection or feeling drained, that is not a personal flaw; it is a sign of a cause a doctor can find and treat.

Frequently asked questions

Can I increase sex stamina in one day?

No method builds real stamina overnight, and "one-day" or "instant" stamina pills sold online are often unsafe. What can help the same day: slowing down, the stop-start technique, slow belly breathing and skipping alcohol before sex. Lasting change comes from Kegels, exercise and better sleep over several weeks, or from treating an underlying cause such as premature ejaculation.

How long does it take to increase sex stamina?

It depends on the cause. In one study, men with lifelong premature ejaculation who did pelvic floor training for 12 weeks improved a lot, with 33 of 40 gaining control. Many men feel fitter within a few weeks of regular cardio, while erection benefits in studies came after about six months. If nothing changes after one to two months, get checked by a doctor.

Which tablet is best for sex stamina?

There is no safe, one-size "stamina tablet". Doctors treat the cause: for premature ejaculation they may prescribe dapoxetine or certain SSRIs, and for erection problems sildenafil or tadalafil, only on prescription. Erection tablets must never be taken with nitrates, and men with heart disease or low BP need a doctor's check first. Avoid "herbal" boosters sold online; the US FDA warns that many contain dangerous hidden ingredients.

What foods increase sex stamina for men?

No single food works like a medicine, but a diet rich in zinc, magnesium, flavonoids and healthy fats supports blood flow, energy and hormones. Everyday Indian options include pumpkin seeds, almonds, peanuts, eggs, chana, rajma, curd, spinach, bananas and seasonal fruit. Cutting down on fried and processed food, sugary drinks, alcohol and tobacco matters just as much.

Does ashwagandha or shilajit increase sex stamina?

Ashwagandha has a few small trials, mostly in men with low desire or stress, showing modest gains in sexual well-being and testosterone, but it is not a proven treatment for PE or ED. Evidence for shilajit is weaker still. Quality is the bigger risk: a JAMA study found one in five ayurvedic products sold online contained lead, mercury or arsenic. Ask a doctor first.

Does masturbation reduce sex stamina?

No. Masturbation does not drain your strength or stamina, and the common belief that losing semen weakens the body (sometimes called dhat) is a myth. Doctors actually suggest masturbation to practise the stop-start and squeeze techniques that help men last longer. It is only worth discussing with a doctor if it feels compulsive or is affecting sex with your partner.
